All Beaten Up

Before...After
A close-up for you non-squeemish people.
So, long story long - Leon broke his glasses back last August and had to get new frames. It had been years since he'd gotten a new prescription, so he got one of those, too. After a few days of trying to adjust to the new prescription and having some eye pain, he tried different lenses. When this didn't help he tried a different frame. When this didn't help, he tried a lesser lens prescription. This went on for months, trying 3 different lens prescriptions and 4 different frames. But, to no avail - he still was having eye pain. He was seeing an opthamologist who had become stumped. All this time I kept asking him if it could be a tumor since he was also having a lot of headaches. He finally asked his eye doctor about it being a tumor. But, she said tumors would cause other issues, but that they should do a CT scan just to rule it out. The CT scan came back with no issues. He saw one of her collegues who was also puzzled. They referred him to an eye surgeon who also had no idea what was wrong. He ordered an MRI just to see what they could find. There ended up being a mass behind his eye - hmm, not quite a tumor, but close enough for me. He could either have it surgically removed, or just keep watching it for a few months. Leon opted to have it removed.

He had his surgery yesterday - a LONG day. He checked in early in the morning and the surgery was done around 11:30. The doctor came out to talk to me, and said that there was not a mass like he had expected from the MRI. He had the MRI image there during surgery, but when ge got in there, he could only see a small lump in the fatty tissue behind his eye. He removed this, but still thought there might be something else and decided to poke around a bit. He said he went farther back just to be sure he didn't miss anything, and found a vein that was a bit enlarged. He trimmed it down and cauterized it. Not seeing anything else that resembled the MRI, he closed him up and hoped he'd gotten what it was that was bothering Leon.

It took quite a while for Leon to wake up from the anesthesia. He just wanted to sleep and sleep and sleep. His oxygen levels would dip too low when he was sleeping, so they put him on oxygen. By late afternoon his oxygen numbers were still not where they were supposed to be. It wasn't until 6:00 p.m. that they finally decided to release him, still concerned about his numbers. Leon didn't feel all that well all night long being groggy and nauseous from the anesthesia - I'll spare the gory details. He didn't sleep all that well last night, but at least he didn't go into respiratory arrest - shwew. He's doing MUCH better today - just constantly hungry. I'm having a hard time keeping up. I'm afraid I'm being a poor nurse.

So, for now he's just hunkered down in bed with a lot of movies and looks like he's been beaten up.

Poor Leon. I hope in the end it was all worth it and that no pain returns.

Playing Nurse is no picnic either. I hope you're doing okay too, Stephanie.

Holy cow, that sounds terrible. This is probably a stupid question but how did they get behind his eye to "poke around"? Ewwww, this stuff grosses me out. I'm afraid I'm never a very good nurse either. I give people about 2 days and then I'm like--ok, time to get up now!

My goodness! What pictures! As the blog was loading, the pictures appeared before the text. I was jumping to all kinds of conclusions: "Leon has been mugged!" "Leon has been in a car wreck!" Then the text appeared. I'm glad things are going better. Has his vision been affected? I guess I should bring some chicken soup, right? Tell Leon we are thinking of him.

Love, Mom

HOly cow, didn't know all that. That's pretty delicate surgery, and a lot of ordeal to go through. Amazing what they can do with surgeries these days though, with such small incisions. However, yuck!!! nausea, hospitals, MRI's. Man, those are not fun times to remember. Hang in there Stephanie, it's not easy being a nurse to husband. Hoping all turns out well. Good luck Leon. We'll pray (wish I knew earlier and we could have prayed beforehand!!)
