Midway Ice Castles

Last night we finally made it up to the Midway Ice Castles. We've heard about this place and have wanted to go for the past couple of months. This is the last week, so we trucked it on up there to check it out. This is one place that you photography talented people would have a hay day in (you know who you are). But, sadly, I'm not one of them, so you'll have to put up with my amateur pictures.
We got there right before it got dark so we were able to see it both in the daylight and then with the lights on. Either way it's pretty neat.
We can't decide which president's profile this resembles. It kind of reminds me of a man wearing a 'coon skin hat. Can you see it? What do you think?
The castles are quite big - a few of them that you can even walk through.
You were not allowed to touch anything, which is a good thing 'cause we had no warm water to rescue Leon's tongue if it got stuck.
We were fascinated with the different directions the ice froze. At times we were afraid for our lives, or eyeballs, with all the sharp, hanging icicles.
Really, a stunning display.
We're glad we made it before it was all over.

My sister in-law and her Hubby went to them. They are so neat. What a perfect and fun family thing to do together.

Those are beautiful!

First, Dave would be freaking out the whole time. He has warned the kids that icicles kill.

Second, you don't like going to Temple Square to look at the lights because it's too cold, but you WILL walk through tunnels made of ice?! Hmmm... :)

But seriously, those are some amazing pictures. I'll bet it was even better in person. Maybe next year we'll try to make it up there.

Natalie - no crowds, no parking or traffic issues, and no stress. I didn't have to worry about my kids getting lost in a crowd and we could take our time. Salt Lake just stresses me out, no matter what time of year it is. Actually, I think my aversion to Temple Square at Christmas is just my pride not wanting to "follow the crowd" - it's SO overdone. Sorry, is that sacreligious? I think it just might be. Oops.

Stephanie--you forgot to mention that instead of trekking around ACRES of land in the cold--you are just following a short path that would only take a few minutes to finish if you didn't stop to look at the beautiful ice!!

We loved them last year. They are just amazing and absolutely beautiful. We found them by accident last year when we were staying in Midway!

How do you find all those neat places? I've never heard of your Midway ice castles, but they're beautiful....but no ice nativity scene!! Who sponsors the display? Fun day. Cute family!

Love, Mom
